Monterosa produces extra virgin olive oil from its 15 acres of olive groves in Moncarapacho, on the Algarve’s Leeward Coast.
It all started in 1969 when Detlev von Rosen came to Portugal from Sweden, to produce vegetables during the winter months for the markets of northern Europe. The mild climate of the Algarve region was ideal for this. In 1972, production switched to ornamental plants and now it is one of the most important nurseries of ornamental plants in Europe.
As a consequence of several years of drought, the existing orange trees were replaced by an olive grove; olive trees need little watering and have been present in the Algarve for thousands of years. This revived the ancient tradition of making olive oil which had almost been lost in the region. It was in the year 2000 that the Monterosa company launched itself in this challenge of producing a high quality Quinta Olive Oil in the Algarve.
The olives are hand picked picked very early, when their antioxidant content is highest, and transported immediately to the mill, where they are ground with granite millstones, in a mechanical process that dates back to Roman times.
The olive oil is extracted, filtered, stored in stainless steel vats and bottled, using the latest technology.
The result is a selection of olive oils of the highest quality: Monterosa Extra Virgin Olive Oils.
